Our kittens are always born in the bedroom, as invariably we find our Queens appear to enjoy bringing their new additions into the world starting at around 2 to 3 am!! The Mums' are quite content to remain in the kittening pen with their new offspring until the kittens open their eyes and thus start to get more adventurous, then the fun starts, first we find them out of the pen, with some help from their mother, but very soon the kittens learn how to get out of it themselve Usually by looking, leaning, then falling out the first time!! At this point the playpen comes into action but we have found from experience that this confinement doesn't last long as the kittens decide, often with a bit of encouragement from their Mothers, that there is much more to explore beyond the boundaries of a playpen. Every new litter is special, although we have been breeding since the early seventies, first Samoyed puppies and then the Abyssinian kittens the wonderment and excitement of each new litter never diminishes, each new day with them is special as the kittens discover new things to do and places to explore, very soon we start to recognize the indivual personalities as the kittens grow. The kittens don't leave us until around thirteen weeks of age after being fully vaccinated and ensuring they have had no reaction to these. We prefer our kittens to go to new homes where prefably they will remain indoors, as long as they have company, toys and plenty of TLC they are perfectly content. Abyssinians and Traffic do not go 'hand in glove' and having bred the kittens, watching them develop their own very unique characters and then leave us to go to caring new homes it is heartbreaking to receive distraught 'phone-calls or letters saying that that same kitten or cat has been killed. Abyssinians can be trained to a harness and several of ours have been taken outdoors for walks with their new families like this, or have been taken around their garden on one. Others have been used to just going into enclosed gardens only with one of the family. Many have become simply house-cats quite happily. They love being with people, and get on well with other animals. A safe environment ensures a happy cat and hopefully a long life. |
